Fracturing Truss Model: Size Effect in Shear Failure of Reinforced Concrete
نویسنده
چکیده
The classical truss model (or strut-and-tie model) for shear failure of reinforced concrete beams is modified to describe fracture phenomena during failure. The failure is assumed to be caused by propagation of a compression fracture across the concrete strut during the portion of the loading history in which the maximum load is reached. The compression fracture may consist of a band of splitting cracks that later interconnect to form a shear crack or a shear fracture band inclined to the strut. The width of the fracture band is assumed to occupy only a portion of the strut length and to represent a fixed material property independent of the beam depth. The energy release from the truss is calculated using two alternative approximate methods: (1) using the potential energy change deduced from the concept of stress relief zones; and (2) using the complementary energy change due to stress redistribution caused by propagation of the fracture band across the compressed concrete strut. Both approaches show that a size effect on the nominal strength of shear failure must exist and that it should approximately follow the size effect law proposed by BaZant in 1984. The physical mechanism of the size effect is also explained in a clear and simple intuitive manner. Finally, it is shown that the applied nominal shear stress that causes large initial diagonal cracks to form also exhibits a size effect.

Shear-friction truss model for reinforced concrete beams
This paper presents a new model, called the "shear-friction truss model," for slender reinforced concrete beams to derive a clear and simple design equation for their ultimate shear strength. In this model, a portion of the shear strength is provided by shear reinforcement as in the traditional truss model, and the remainder by the shear-friction mechanism. Friction resistance is derived consid...

Flanged shear walls are used extensively in moderate- and high-rise buildings to resist lateral loads induced by earthquakes. The seismic performance of many buildings is, therefore, closely linked to the behavior of the reinforced concrete walls. They must be carefully designed to provide not only adequate strength, but also sufficient ductility to avoid brittle failure under strong lateral lo...

In this research, using the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), a new truss based model is proposed to predict the behavior of reinforced concrete coupling beams with diagonal reinforcement. The model is able to consider the effects of shear and axial forces and bending moment, simultaneously. The proposed model includes a nonlinear shear spring, an axial spring, two inclined truss member...

Nowadays, concrete with strength higher than 50 MPa is utilized due to the ever increasing need for higher strength and prolonged healing properties. Despite the widespread use of high-strength concrete, only a few research projects have been conducted on the punching shear strength of high-strength concrete slabs. Reinforced concrete flat slabs are widely employed in structural systems. The lo...
متن کاملShear Behavior Models of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beams Modifying Softened Truss Model Approaches
Recognizing that steel fibers can supplement the brittle tensile characteristics of concrete, many studies have been conducted on the shear performance of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) members. However, previous studies were mostly focused on the shear strength and proposed empirical shear strength equations based on their experimental results. Thus, this study attempts to estimate the...
